Dawn, it was the time where the world seemed to breathe again. The damp, dense, suffocating touch of darkness retreated under the searing passion of the sun goddess. Golds, oranges, and reds streaked the gray sky as the heavenly orb rose over the horizon. Warmth took the place of cold and dew gradually evaporated from the surface of the earth. As the rays of light slowly reached out to embrace every corner of the world birds would wake and start singing. All sorts of animals would start waking and going about their business. However there was no bird song around the Western Castle this day and things were quiet except for the sound of feet crunching upon the gravel on the path leading to the door.
A womanly figure was making her way slowly up to the front gates. Confidant was she, her steps sure and moving with fluid grace. She was decked in armor fit for a lady or lord, though it had need of repair. Smoke rose from her person in thin wisps, any moisture in the air hissing and evaporating around her on contact. The female was battered as well, scuffed with dirt and decorated with gore. Blood that was a mixture of her own and others splattered along her belly and was caked to her hands. On her face were smudges that evidenced of war. Her hair was tousled and the feathers on her wings ruffled. A few even fell out as she made her way up to the main gates. In all it looked as if she had seen hell, as did the four battered youkai behind her.
What would strike any observer as strange though was her expression. Pupiless eyes seemed to hold a victorious mirth and the grin on her lips was smug. She looked very much like the cat who had just eaten the canary, ironic considering what type of Youkai she was. "My lady, are you sure that these Inu will accept your offer? Behind her one of the males questioned, looking tired and sordid. He was a Phoenix as well though colored in blues instead of reds. Armor that was similar to hers adorned him but was male in style. "Hai Takka, I think they will. There are too many dangers these days. I'm sure that even the Great Western Lord is starting to feel the noose around his neck and would appreciate an Ally. Throwing a grin back at him she rustled her feathers, the yasha adgusting her gristle crusted scythe in its holster on her hip.
Though she assured her second general Maiko was not so sure herself on the inside. The Inu had always been very pack oriented and didn't often extend the olive branch to outsiders. Many had been turned down before, or so she had heard. However as the new owner and Lady of the southern lands the Phoenix Taiyoukai needed the support of another Lord. She did not wish to have her House struck down in its infancy due to some minor instability in the beginning. Sighing inwardly she continued to trudge up to the gates that protected The House of The Moon, flicking some dirt out of the empty spots that used to contain defensive magma. Only one was left not breached, the one in the middle of her chest.
Ahead of her the dozen or so guards were getting restless, one having even run off to alert the Lords that there was a strange group of battered Phoenix Youkai heading to the gates. Maiko saw this and really did sigh this time. Things were about to get potentially messy, though she honestly hoped it did not degrade that badly. Behind her the generals were getting restless, some even moving their hands to the hilts of their weapons. The female heard this and snapped at them, shooting warning looks over her shoulder. "Do not give them a reason to be wary! Leave your weapons alone and don't look so flighty. For four males who just helped to settle the civil unrest in the South and just went through the battle of their lives you look like a bunch of twitching canaries in cages."
Snorting at them as they settled she finally paused, stopping a good six yards away from the main gates. Already the guards were pointing their pikes at them defensively, more of them coming to help back up the first dozen. Passively she held up her hands and extended her wings fully, the glimmering twelve foot span completely open to show that she was not hiding any secret weapon in which to cause harm with. Her generals did the same.
Lifting her face to the sun and closing her eyes for a moment, praying for peace, Maiko took in a deep cleansing breath. She let it out slowly, enjoying the warmth on her skin. Gathering herself and opening white orbs again she called out to the guards in a rich honeyed voice. "Me and my Kin mean none within or without the Moons house harm! We come seeking the ear of the Lord in hope of creating a mutually beneficial Alliance with him! We shall wait for his word, be it invitation to discuss the Alliance or rejection outright." Sincerely she hoped it wasn't the latter and the faces of her generals belayed her hope. All they could do now was wait.

The bright, golden ball of light drifted through the sky, and slowly descended to the ground, fading to reveal the elegant form of the taiyoukai known as Sesshoumaru.
Sesshoumaru walked calmly toward his castle. Since he was rarely ever at his castle, busying himself with more important matters, he left it to the care of the servants and guards, letting it be known, though not directly, that if something were ever amiss whenever he chose to appear, he would not be very forgiving. He just wanted to check up on his quarters to make sure all was well and that everything was as he had left it.
But, everything was not as he had left it. For one, he did not recall there being a group of battle worn phoenix youkai at his gate before. Nor did he leave his guards in a nervous disarray. He did not pause in his stride, though, as he walked from the opposite direction the group was facing. If they heard his approach, he did not care, though his footfalls were silent.
He regarded them a bit warily, but indifferently. From what he his sensitive ears had caught while heading toward them, they were seeking an audience with him. And what for? As if he needed any kind of alliance with anyone. He was confident enough with his own abilities to be able to scoff at others and their weaknesses. Luckily, Sesshoumaru was not in a foul mood, at the moment, so he would hear them.
Seemingly ignoring them, at first, he wordlessly walked passed them and through the gate, the guards hurriedly opening it for him to enter. Only until he was a few meters into his grounds, did he pause and look over his shoulder at the one that looked to hold the most authority, the female. His golden eyes hinted that he would allow them to follow. And, his guards knew that if he had not attacked them, yet, that these strange visitors would be allowed to pass. Really, Sesshoumaru did not care either way, as he turned away and proceeded toward his castle.
The guards silently and obediently opened the doors for him and held them open to invite their lord's guests in as Sesshoumaru disappeared into the cool halls. Once he was in the empty throne room, a large, circular room with very few decorations, if any, on the walls, he turned and subtly shifted his attention from his castle and servants, to the phoenix youkai that had followed him.
"What is it that you want?" he asked calmly. There was no malice behind his words, only a bit of curiosity.
He would never be able to have any peace of mind, now would he? Being dragged around by Rin to appease her, and being annoyed by his vassal's absence and presence, did not allow for him to relax much. And neither did all of these disputes over power and land by the other lords and ladies. Oh, well. A Lord's work was never done and most definitely was not peaceful.

"One. Two. Three. Four. Five..." He trailed off with his words, losing count over and over again, running out of things to count. Golden sunlit orbs flashed up to look at the patterns in the ceiling. They repeated over and over again. He couldn't make out how many there were, just that they annoyed him. It wasn't anything special. Just different things made from the stone that held up the castle. It was amazing how little and yet so much effort had gone into building this place. So much labor for a human and none for a demon.
InuYasha was barely here by choice. More or less he was here for his mother because she refused to leave her father's side. Well, it wasn't like he could make her travel with him back to old Kaede's village anyway. That was no place fit for a woman such as her. His father seemed to always be lurking somewhere around this old castle as well. It had been his in the first place. Yet today, they were gone and InuYasha had been left there all alone with the guards and servants. Now how fun was that really?
No, he should have been out with Kagome, Sango, Miroku, Kirara, and Shippou looking for shards of the Shikon no Tama. That was what he was meant to do. That way he could become a full demon like the others around him. That way he'd have more power to protect those that were dear to him. Wasn't that why he wanted to become a full demon? Yet tehre ws always that fear that lingered in the back of his mind that one day he would lose control. He'd lost that control and turn one those he loved.
Quickly, he shook his head at the thought to throw it from his mind. There was no need to think of such things. InuYasha got up from his seat and went to look out of the window of the castle. No, it wasn't just a castle. It was Sesshoumaru's castle. That was the whole thought that he didn't like about it. He didn't like that his mother had to stay in Sesshoumaru's castle even though she had his father here to care for her. Now though Izayori and Inu no Taishou were off somewhere else.
An unfamiliar scent came back to him as the wind worked it's way into the window. His golden sunlit eyes ventured around, searching for the owners of that smell. It was something unique. It wasn't long before off in the distance he'd seen Maiko and her men coming up towards the path to the castle. Well that wasn't something that you saw everyday. It was very unusual. By the looks of it they weren't here for anything fun unless they were here to fight with someone here. A smirk crossed his face at the thought.
He really did need to exercise some. The inu hanyou was becoming a bit rusty with his blade as well because he hadn't been working with it as much. He watched as the came up to the front gates, not to far away but close enough. His silver hued ears perked forward as he listened to what they had to say. An alliance? Why would any one want to form an alliance with Sesshoumaru? Well that was unless it was with his father though. He couldn't say for sure as to whom it may have concerned just then.
Not long after that a familiar scent had come to him this time. He glanced back up to see that Sesshoumaru was coming in. How nice. He'd thought he'd be able to stay in the castle all day by himself. Even though he didn't like "living" with Sesshoumaru, he dealt with it. There was no need for them to fight as long as Sesshoumaru had no reason to go after him. Even then, InuYasha had fought along side Sesshoumaru a few times. So maybe their relationship with each other wasn't as bad as they both thought.
With ease, InuYasha turned to find himself going to the door that had him blocked off. Then he ventured back into the front of the castle, curious to see what would happen. He arrived to the front just as Sesshoumaru and the phoenix youkai had stepped in. So Sesshoumaru had allowed the access into the castle. Well now this really would be something to see and try to understand. How odd f his brother to say such a thing. Then again, he didn't have Jaken and Rin following him right now so maybe he was in a good mood.
The inu hanyou put his arms in the sleeves of his robe of the fire rat and walked forward some but paused. He wouldn't say anything just yet because he didn't want to hear some stupid comment from Sesshoumaru telling him how stupid he was or something like that. Though he looked on at Maiko and her man again, watching them closely to see what they would do. 'Coming all the way here for nothing I bet,' he thought to himself. He was sure that Sesshoumaru would turn down their alliance. Why wouldn't he have done so?
A feeling itched at him and he found that he just couldn't stay silent. It just wasn't the way that InuYasha was. He was one that had to speak his mind no matter the type of response that he would have gotten. "What in the hell are yall doing here," he finally asked. It was more or less directed to everyone in the room. One, because Sesshoumaru never came around the castle anymore. Two, because he still wanted to know the true purpose for these phoenix youkai of being here. Leaning against the wall, he began to wait.

It would seem that the group did not have to wait long before they got their answer. A scent that was deep, woodsy, of dog, and completely male filled the nose of the fenikkusu. Wait, was that wisteria too? One eyebrow raised a fraction of an inch, head turning to the direction that the scent was coming from. It was quickly accompanied by a dominating presence, her youki expanding instinctively to such pressure. Clearly one of the lords was returning home. There was no way that a foot soldier or general held that much power. True the Inu of the West were a completely different breed of youkai when it came to strength but there were limits.
Uneasily Maiko ruffled her feathers then sleeked them out again, eyes telescoping to pick out the taiyoukai coming her way. She almost jerked when she realized just how close he already was to his home. Apparently the days previous battles had cost her more energy then she thought they had if she hadn't of been able to pick up on him when he was so close. Then again she had been fighting non-stop for nearly a week. To be quite honest she was rather surprised that some of her generals had made it this far without collapsing. But one of them was dangerously close to doing just that if the way Shiri's knees were trembling was anything to go by.
Steeling herself the female tensed, her battered body readying itself to defend just in case the Lord was in a flagrantly bad mood. Outwardly she looked as poised and as calm as a Lady ready to go to court when he walked up the path to his home. Inwardly though she was ready to get out of there like a bat out of hell if things got hairy. Like a hawk watching a particularly dangerous rattle snake she followed him with her pupiless eyes, not saying a word. His body language spoke enough for her to understand that he would only speak when he was ready. This one was apparently not one to waste words so at least that part of his reputation was true.
Consciously Maiko had to flex her fingers to get the tension out of them, the digits having crooked slightly as if making ready to use the claws at the tips. It was while she was doing this that he gave them the 'well, come on' look. Glancing back at her men she jerked her chin in the direction Sesshoumaru was going. Moving with more grace in her weakened state then any human could ever pray to muster on a good day she moved to follow him. A wary eye was given to the guards as her group passed through the gates, mostly by her generals. They were far more drained then she was and at this point their lives depended on the whims of a male who had a reputation of low tolerance for stupidity.
Too focused on what she came here to do the fenikkusu barely looked at the detail of his lavish home. However she did have the foresight to memorize the path they took to get where they were going. A few more feathers fell to decorate the Taiyoukai's floor, the amber-gold sheen scintillating in the morning light that filtered into the palace. Even if things did not go well for her those few feathers would be a reminder of her presence. 'I should not be so morbid', she thought to herself while banishing such a daunting idea from her mind.
When they finally got to the prospective throne room Maiko stopped a respective few yards away from the throne itself. Her feet placed themselves at the common place military stance to make it look as if she was at ease in her skin. In reality she needed to evenly distribute her weight because she was feeling wary. Taking a breath she was just about to thank the Lord for allowing them entry when out of the corner of her eye she caught a glint of red. Okay, that definitely confirmed that she was fatigued. If a Hanyou could sneak up on her she was due for a long nap, some good food, and a hot bath. Inwardly sighing she watched him take his place to one side, her slightly muddled mind putting a name to his face. 'Inuyasha, guardian of the Shikon Miko,' was her inner diologue. Hmm...maybe she could work with this.
She'd barely shifted her eyes back to Sesshoumaru when the pup opened his mouth. Too depleted to give a damn anymore the female slowly turned her head in his direction again. Her eyes took on a wickedly mischievous glint and her mouth shifted into a demented little grin. Fangs were showed as she boldly chuckled at the young lord, shaking her head at him slowly. With a sigh and a shrug she threw all pretenses out the window. In her situation what did it matter if she was formal or not? Didn't the way she'd come to them show she was not trying to pull the wool over their eyes?
Focusing on the main male once again she once more sighed, her expression one of tired acceptance for her situation. "I'll cut right to the chase since dancing around the subject at hand with formalities will just waste both of our time Sesshoumaru-Sama," she commented in an amused yet even tone. Why was she finding the fact that this male could easily kill her so funny all of a sudden? Blame it on fatigue. "My name is Maiko Taiyou and as the Fenikkusu Youkai's Lady I come seeking an alliance with you, an alliance of the Moon and Sun if you want to be poetic." Her wry humor was making her generals nervous but she halted their figitin with a sweeping hand motion.
Bottomless opal eyes met pools of molten gold in an undaunted stare. "I offer you highly valued information in return for support." Mid sentence the female had subtly twitched, her left wing slowly starting to lift up and out until it was fully extended. "Once you have used this information to your benefit to the fullest and my lands are completely stable there are other things the South can offer the West." While she elaborated one slender hand reached up and sifted through the plumage of her wing until it found what it was looking for. "My race has an on going pact and trade with the deep run Maguma Ryu. We receive their monthly scale sheddings in compensation for making sure none tamper with the entrances to their lairs."
With a jerk and a twist the female yanked a serrated throwing knife out of the flesh of her wing. Crimson fluid dripped to the floor, hissing on contact with the air from the sheer heat it gave off. She gave no indication outwardly that this had hurt in the slightest. "We would be willing to open trade routes with you for these scales so you can use them for armor or whatever you see fit. There are other things we can offer as well but I figured these would be of more interest." Experimentally she flexed her wing. Finding that the small wound had healed itself sufficiently she snapped it back into its resting position. "Plus, should you ever need aid in battle me and mine would aid you to our fullest extent." Here she paused to grin in an amused fashion, sweeping her free hand over herself to indicate her state of being. "Of course we'd not come with feathers so ruffled as we have at this point." To add a little more comic relief to the situation she puffed out the feathers on her wings to make it appear as if she'd just been electrocuted. Maybe if she could amuse him he'd be more susceptible to her proposal? When hell froze over perhaps.
"However I think that you'd be more interested in that information I have. It also comes with a map that indicates a location that my trackers were able to find." 'Not that it was hard,' she silently added to herself. "That would be everything my Lord." Truthfully, that was all she had to offer for now. Did she just sign her death warrant? She had no idea. Would he accept her offer? From the looks of him, probably not. Then again, one never really could judge a book by its cover.

First off, he couldn't believe that any one would pay such respect to Sesshoumaru. It wasn't like his brother was anything great of something of that sort. He was just another stupid demon as far as InuYasha was concerned. Heck, he was sure that he could have been a better lord than his brother would ever be. Though the only problem with that was that he wasn't one to be the ruler of the world of anything of that sort. He didn't want that sort of power. It was just of no use to him then.
The sort of power that the inu hanyou wasn't one that you could just gain by taking on a stupid title like these lords and ladies did these days. No, the power that he wanted had to be gained through training and harsh fighting. That or it was to use the Shikon no Tama to gain that power. That was just increasing his own strength though. So that way he could protect the ones that he loved. Yet, he still hadn't learned that he gained his power by protecting the ones that eh did love. No jewel needed.
His golden sunlit orbs then caught sight of the phoenix demon looking at him. A smirk was painted across his face when she'd looked at him. InuYasha was just glad to be getting some sort of attention. He was important after all. Well that was something that he wanted to believe. Everyone else really could have just cared less about him and would go on with the rest of their business. After all, he was just a hanyou. Why should someone care for such a awful creature? He didn't have a place to fit in and never would.
InuYasha then blinked when the female phoenix youkai had said nothing to him. She'd just gone on with her life like he didn't matter? Oh no, InuYasha would not take that! How dare she do such a thing?! Sesshoumaru wasn't the only one of importance to the world. His ears pinned back and a soft growl erupted in his throat just then. His golden orbs glared back over at his half brother just then. 'That damn attention hog. He's nothing special,' InuYasha thought venomously to himself. This was just insane as it would ever get now.
Though he stayed silent, listening to what the girl had to say in the first place. Something about an alliance of the sun and the moon? He wanted to burst out laughing at the offer that she had to grant with Sesshoumaru. What sort of thing was this? It wasn't like they were out in the market place doing trades and what not? No, he was sure that this just had to be for the laughs. That or this girl must have really had been that crazy. Then again, you never knew about others these days. They were odd.
Then the phoenix demon went on something about this odd armor thing or whatever. When she finished, he blinked, shifting his gaze from Sesshoumaru and then back to her. It seemed like his brother wouldn't say a word about it just yet. Sesshoumaru was that silent type anyway so he didn't expect much less from the inu youkai. Maybe Sesshoumaru was to afraid or maybe he was paralyzed by his stupidity. InuYasha was sure that it had to be one of those things as he thought it over. Sesshoumaru still wasn't all that great in his eyes.
"Hey bird brain," he then called back out to Maiko. "I think you forgot that I'm here too! You can't just go around ignoring me!" A fury was now glazed over in his eyes and he was sure that he got his attention. If that didn't work then he could always just whip out Tetsusaiga and send a Kaze no Kizu at her since she was a demon. If she tried anything stupid in his eyes and fought back, he had the Backlash Wave to back him up. Maybe he didn't realize just what she was.
Then, he opened his big mouth again to spit out more of his opinions.. "I think you just came here and wasted your own time. It's not like Sesshoumaru would ever form an alliance with someone," the inu hanyou said, glancing back at his older brother for a split second. Oh this was just to fun and amusing. He was glad now for a second that his mother and father did live here. Just glad that the rest of his group was gone and that he had come for a visit. Oh what fun he was having now today.
"Not to mention that he's never here anyway. Always pulling along that imp, dragon-horse thing, and that girl, Rin," he stated, getting braver in his words. As he continued to look back at Sesshoumaru, he gave him a fanged smirk, sure that he could move out of the way of any incoming attack that his brother would have sent him. Though, that wouldn't make him look like that good of a lord now, would it? Sesshoumaru may as well have slipped down to the level of Jaken if he were to do such a thing right there.
Trying to hold back a laugh, he spoke again. "Where are your little friends anyway, Sesshoumaru? Did you leave them behind? You know, they might get hurt if you're not around to protect them. What if a demon eats Rin? Oh, that wouldn't look to good on your part." Of course he wasn't sure if Sesshoumaru would allow such a thing to happen or not. Here his brother was, one that hated mortals and yet he turned around and allowed Rin to follow him. Why Jaken was there in the first place, he would never figure out.
Looking back to the phoenix demon again, he smiled, putting his arms in the sleeves of his red kimono. "If you want to form an alliance with someone, you may as well talk to my father," he stated. Then he paused for a second as he began to remember something else. "Though, he's out right now. I'm sure you could fly and track him down or something like that... If your wings even work any more." He couldn't believe how filthy these demons were. He didn't even look that bad after coming out of a fight.
Trying to think of something else to add on, he remembered that Maiko had mentioned those scales and what not for armor. His golden gaze shot back to the armor on Sesshoumaru again and he snickered. The inu hanyou couldn't count how many times he'd been in battle with Sesshoumaru and had demolished his armor with just that Tetsusaiga or his claws alone. So many times, so many memories. He would have counted but counting all those patterns in the ceiling er earlier were enough for him for one day. So no point in trying to count it.
"I take that back. Sesshoumaru may need those scales for armor. Tetsusaiga and I have kicked his ass plenty of time." His voice held a great pride in it, sure that he was amazing himself. He was sure that he was getting under Sesshoumaru's skin to but wondered if his demon brother would ever express such annoyance with him. Maybe he would just try to whip him with that whip thing he had again. Not that he couldn't escape from it in a single bound anyway. He and Sesshoumaru both should have known that very well by now.
Shifting his attention back to Maiko then, he kept that same look of confidence on his face. "Well, that's if you think that my Tetsusaiga can't break the armor anyway. I suppose we could always give it a test run." InuYasha himself was always up for a fight. He had great confidence in his abilities and in his sword. If someone even mentioned a demon he would be the first one on the scene to go and take it out. It was like he ran off the adrenaline rush that he got from fighting. Maybe a bad hobby.
InuYasha glanced back to Sesshoumaru one last time and spoke. "Well what are you going to do, Sesshoumaru? Just stand there and give your guests the silent treatment? Some sort of lord you are. Hmph. As if you even deserve the title of 'Lord of the West.' Not like you even put it to any use," the inu hanyou rambled on. He didn't even think that he knew what he was talking about anymore. Maybe he just liked to hear his own voice. Yeah, that had to be it because he'd gone on and on to much now.

Sesshoumaru's golden gaze briefly flickered over to InuYasha, irritated that he was here. But, he returned his attention to the female in front of him, hoping that the hanyou would leave if no attention was given to him. Which was so very wrong. Sesshoumaru never really paid any mind to his half brother's personality, other than his weak points. That was all that really mattered to him. He had the patience to deal with the youkai before him, but none whatsoever for his half brother.
The inu taiyoukai listened attentively to the words of the one who called herself Maiko, though the expression on his face made it seem that he was uninterested and indifferent, but that was just his normal, everyday expression. He only thought that showing emotions were a sign of weakness. Facial expressions could easily be read and, in battle, others can often predict the next move using these against their opponents. Remaining stoic was one way to confuse and get the best of the enemy, other than sheer power and strength.
He gave no reaction to her odd actions of ruffling her feathers or pulling the knife from her wing, and he made no comment on her and her group's unruly appearance. It was just an unspoken trust instead of a show of weakness, to appear before another in their lands to ask for an alliance while sporting the recent wear and tear of battle. As he turned Maiko's words over in his mind, he heard his half brother speak once more. He had picked up the hint of very useful information in her offer. His subordinates could always use better armor. His own was fine, maintained by his own youki, he could probably even go without it, but he took the precaution to wear it, anyway.
He paused in his thoughts to listen to InuYasha, curious to know what exactly the hanyou was planning to do. Oh, wait, InuYasha never planned anything, he was too stupid to. As stupid as anything he ever said.
And of course, all he heard from his half brother were insults. Oh really, he wanted to play that game? Sesshoumaru kept his eyes on Maiko as the hanyou spoke, giving the appearance that he was ignoring him. He clenched his teeth to keep himself from snapping back at him, though. There was no need to argue with the hanyou while he had guests, even if his words irritated even more than Jaken did.
Once he was sure that he was done speaking and annoying the hell out of him, for the moment, the taiyoukai looked at InuYasha, giving him his cold glare. Now, how was he going to get back at him for interrupting his business; business that the hanyou would know nothing about? But, first things, first. He looked back at Maiko, not wanting to be rude and ignore her. That was not what a lord did.
"Your offer of an alliance sounds very interesting, and I am willing to consider it," he said, "Elaborate more on this information of yours, if you please," he added as polite as he could with his cold voice. He was curious and wanted to know if her gathered intelligence really was what he thought.
Sesshoumaru thought for a moment, then turned and calmly moved towards his half brother, no visible malice in his step. He stopped directly in front of him and reached out a hand to pinch InuYasha's ear and tugged on it like one would do with a naughty child, a light smirk playing on his face.
"Now, now, little brother, you mustn't meddle in the affairs of my land, especially while you are staying in my castle," he said coolly, putting a hidden threat that while the hanyou was in his territory, he could do whatever he wanted with him. As if he cared what his father would think of this, this was all his fault, anyway. If he had been given the Tetsusaiga in the first place, he would not have had to seek out his half brother to wrest it from him. But, that mattered very little now, he had the Bakusaiga for himself. He only wanted the Tetsusaiga just so he can see the look on his half brother's face when he is rendered defenseless.
