Kagome felt the twinges of worry as she climbed out of the Bone Eaters Well, and pulled her heavy pack out behind her. Inuyasha hadn't been to her era to see her in awhile, and after the anger had vanished, worry had replaced it. Had something happened to him while she had been studying for her finals? Worry slowly started to turn to fear as she wondered if he had been hurt, or worse... No one would have been able to come to her, to tell her that he was in trouble or hurt. She hadn't spent so long in her era, she knew it, but she had to finish those finals so she could pass into the next grade! She just wished Inuyasha could have understood that... Kagome stumbled as she yanked her bag out the rest of the way, and its heavy bulk fell on the ground off the side of the well. She sighed as she looked at it. She had no idea how she would get it to Kaede's village without hurting her back. She should have ignored her mother when she kept insisting on all the extra food, but what could she do now?
Kagome turned and looked around, hoping Inuyasha would appear to help her like he always did when she came over to this side of the Well, but there was nothing... "Inuyasha..." She whispered as she felt a twist in her chest. Worry and fear gnawed at her as she managed to lift her bag and start off to the village, struggling under the bulk of the backpack, always keeping an eye or ear out for a sight or sound of Inuyasha coming to help her.

How long had it been since Kagome had come back to his era? Maybe a week? More? He couldn't keep count of the days anymore. No one ever seemed to give him the chance anymore around here. Sango and Miroku were off doing whatever it was they did while Shippou was always being Shippou. He'd been stuck here, in the village, unable to go anywhere because those stupid villagers would never let him! The old hag was always taking advantage of him, using him as a tool to do the labor for the people so they could all relax.
While Kagome had been gone though, so many things had happened though. So many things that involved people that were greatly close to him. He and Kikyou had gone fishing together. The miko had protected him on the night of the new moon when he had turned into a human. Then his mother and father had come back some how. He wasn't sure how they were revived just yet, but oddly enough it was a relief to have them back. He'd learned to bond with his father who now taught him more about the Tetsusaiga. He hadn't told them much about Kagome though, just Kikyou and about the Shikon no Tama.
"Leave me alone," came a sudden shout ringing throughout the whole forest! "I'm getting so sick of you pests!" It was InuYasha, yelling back at the village children that tugged at his kimono and at his dogs ears. They'd now taken a liking to him and would follow him all over the place now, annoying him to the point where he felt like just killing himself. "I"m NOT going to play with you!!!" There was an urge there to just go and hit every single one of them across the head or throw them across the forest.

Kagome winced as she stumbled under the weight of her bag. She was almost to the village now, she could just hear people shouting. She picked up her pace, was someone hurt? But when she heard the all-too familiar voice, she realized it was Inuyasha yelling at the village's children again, probably for pulling at his ears again. Kagome slowed again, the pace killing her back, and stopped at the edge of the forest, standing just at the edge of the sunlight that beamed down from the bright blue sky. She watched him glaring at the kids as they yanked on his kimono and ears.
"Inuyasha..." She said softly. She hadn't meant to say it aloud, she knew he would hear her, but she hadn't been able to help it. He wasn't hurt, or dead or anything. He just hadn't come back to get her like he normally did. Though instead of anger, Kagome felt hurt that he hadn't come to get her back from her era. Was he angry with her?
Kagome shoved the hurt away as she watched him with the children, tried to replace it with anger instead. The pack was killing her back, but she barely noticed it anymore. Was he angry with her for insisting she had to stay? She did have to stay though, but now that finals were over she could stay in this era for awhile without having to worry about school or her own era for awhile. And that was what Inuyasha had wanted... Wasn't it?

His ears flickered slightly to his name being spoken but more or less to the voice that had released it into the wind. His golden gaze shot up away from the children and to Kagome, staring at her for a moment. How had he not noticed that she was back? Had she been downwind from him? No, he still would have been able to smell her, he was sure of that. To be honest, he was glad to see her again although he would never express it straight forward to her. It was a relief to know that she was alright, not him.
"I said get off of me," he said shoving the last kid away. Then a butterfly passing by had caught their attention and they ran away from him, chasing after it. What a relief. He glared back at the high school girl, hands in the sleeves of his kimono. It was obvious by his expression and body language that he wasn't pleased with her taking so long to get back. He stomped back over to her normally as he usually did when she came back from her era after making him wait forever to come back anyway. How annoying!
"And where in the hell have you been, Kagome," he spat out his greeting to her. He kept his stance as he came to a stop in front of the girl, refusing to budge or change his expression for any reason. He was annoyed and she would have to deal with that. Not like a 'sit' wouldn't help though. It put him under some sense of control, but always angered him even further. That wasn't the smartest thing to do until one of them turned around and walked off out of their anger towards each other. He waited.

For a moment, Inuyasha didn't move after she had spoken his name, but when he did, Kagome smiled faintly. Relief that he was safe, warred with annoyance that he hadn't come to see her before in her own era. When he managed to get the last child away from him, and he stomped over to her with a look of angry annoyance on his face, Kagome felt her own face fall into the same angry expression. She let the bag fall with a loud thunk! on the ground, and put her hands on her hips as she tilted her head so she could glare at him. How dare he accuse her of taking so long when she had school! And it wasn't like he couldn't have come back to see her or something!
"I've been studying for my finals!" Kagome spat back, her eyes sparking with temper. "Where do you think I've been?! I told you before I had to study for them, and now that I've passed I can stay here for awhile!" She wanted to yell "sit" as loud and angrily as she could, but she refrained herself for the moment. If he kept making her angry though, she would yell it!

The sound of the bag dropping made his ears fall back slightly. He took a quick note of the change in Kagome's facial expressions. She was clearly upset with him now and that was his own fault for starting it. He was taken aback for second when Kagome had yelled back at him so quickly. He wasn't one to back down for anything though. InuYasha had a bone to pick with her and right now he seemed safe since she hadn't yelled sit at him yet. So he took his chances and got right back up in her face.
"Why don't just just fire an arrow at it or something and get rid of it," he yelled back at her. InuYasha had still never been able to understand what this studying and finals stuff was. Heck, he didn't really even know what a school was. There was no point in it in this era. Here, it was kill or be killed. You had to stand up for yourself, not trust anyone, and deal with everything that came his way. It was a way of life. "That's no excuse anyway, we're supposed to be finding the jewel shards!"
He turned his gaze away from her then, sticking his nose up in the air the way he always did. His eyes were closed, but his ears still stayed back in Kagome's direction. "Kikyou would never 'study' for a 'final,'" he then said to himself out loud, unknowingly, thinking he'd just kept it locked up in his head as a thought. Kagome had always hated it from the very beginning when he was going around calling her Kikyou, or comparing her to his past lover that had shot him in the chest with a scared arrow. Bad days.

Kagome's eyes narrowed. "Fire an arrow at it?! I can't just fire arrows at everything that annoys me, Inuyasha! I have to study for my finals otherwise I'll be held back, and it'll be your fault!" She fumed in her head, wanting to say 'Why hadn't you come to get me before?' or 'Why didn't you ever come see me?' but Kagome kept those thoughts locked up tight, not wanting him to know it had upset her that he hadn't ever come to her era for the last week. "And it's a perfectly good excuse! I need to learn in my era, otherwise I won't be able to make a living!" She wanted to stomp her foot on the ground, as if saying 'That's final' but that seemed almost too childish to her, like she was throwing a tantrum.
When Inuyasha turned his head away, and mentioned Kikyo, a hurt expression flitted across Kagome's face before she banished it, in case he happened to look. "I'm not Kikyo!" She yelled. She hadn't yelled before now, but now she really was angry instead of just irritated. "I'm not anything like Kikyo!" She felt the annoying burning behind her eyes that alerted her to the onset of tears that she refused to show to anyone when Kikyo was mentioned. She didn't understand why Inuyasha always had to compare her to Kikyo. Besides Kagome being her reincarnation, they were nothing alike. Why couldn't he just see that?

Oh, now he had really done it. He would be doomed for life here on out. He'd slipped and just ruined everything. When Kagome began to yell about Kikyou, at first he honestly couldn't understand why. Well, that was until he realized that he'd unwillingly said his thoughts out loud. That was a huge mistake on his part. The inu hanyou flinched back at Kagome's words as she now seriously yelled ta him. He had no idea what to say back at first, had no idea how to react because he was in shock at her words.
Finally, he found some confidence in himself again and yelled back at here. "I never said you were Kikyou or anything like her," he yelled back at her. He was about to say something smart but as he looked at Kagome, looked into those deep chocolate brown orbs, his heart sank. Not because of Kikyou, but because he had judged Kagome again, had compared her. He was trying so hard to get over that, to just stop the horrible habit. It wasn't his fault they smelled almost the same, shared the same soul, looked the same, and most had all, they'd both stolen his heart.
He adverted his golden sunlit orbs from Kagome's and looked back down at the ground. He felt like he'd betrayed her in a way, by accidentally running into Kikyou and spending the day with the undead miko. Yet, it as the idea he'd had of bringing Kikyou back to the flesh that made him feel worse. Luckly, Kikyou hadn't agreed or he would have lost Kagome forever, her soul taken away. Kikyou had watched out for Kagome when he hadn't, not being selfish anymore about the whole thing. Yet him, he hadn't even thought twice of it.

A small sense of triumph lifted Kagome's suddenly dark mood when Inuyasha flinched back from her angry voice, but it faded fast when he turned and yelled right back. She wanted to yell it, could feel the word pushing at her lips so she could scream it at him, so the beads around his neck would force him to fall so she could stomp off in a temper, but she didn't, not just yet.
"You might not have said that, but you compared me to her again!" Kagome shouted right back at him, her eyes furious, and sad. She had never been able to hide strong emotions like that from her eyes, and it irritated her sometimes. Right then though, that was the last thing on her mind. "You keep comparing me to her! I'm nothing like Kikyo, and I never will be!"
Unable to keep her rage in check, and the tears that threatened to well in her eyes, Kagome spun away from him, her black hair flying around her shoulders as she stomped off a couple of paces before she stopped, her fists clenched at her sides. Why had she hoped for a good reunion with him for once, when this was all she ever got after coming back from her era after an extended stay? She had even started to feel guilty about not going back sooner, but now she was seriously considering going back and just curling up in her own warm bed at her own house. She felt the tears prick her eyes, but she still didn't turn as she glared down at her bag, her back to Inuyasha and the source of her current state. Why can't he just see how much it hurts when he compares me to her?

It was true that Kagome would never been anything like Kikyou. It would have never been possible anyway. He couldn't see that sad lonely smile that Kikyou had engraved in his head and plaster it on Kagome's features. That smile was what had made him feel guilty for the first time in his life. It was what had never gotten the miko out of his mind. It was why then he was never able to leave her side for the time that they were together. It was so crazy how one person could have such an impact on you.
Then Kagome had turned her back on him and stomped off on him. His mind had quickly left Kikyou that second, and he grew concerned, wondering so much what he he'd done wrong even though he knew. That was no reason for Kagome to just go and turn her back on him though! For one, it was just rude. Besides, he didn't like not knowing what she was thinking. He could normally only try and get a faint idea of that when ever he looked into her eyes. How was he supposed to do something like that now?
Then the wind gently blew a faint scent to him. Salt. He panicked, knowing that it could only come from one score so close by. His ear pricked forward and his eyes grew with worry. If anything made him weak besides the night of the new moon, it was these human emotions. It was the way that these emotions were triggered when some close to him started to cry, someone like Kagome or Kikyou. He felt a large rock come crashing down on his heart, pulling it down and into nothingness. Exactly, how was he supposed to deal with this?
"Kagome," he shouted as he started to run over to her, stopping behind the high school girl. "Are you crying?" The panic was obvious in his vocals but it also showed that he was annoyed, as usual. "Come on, don't dry! Stop being stupid!" That may have sealed his fate right then and there, he didn't know because he was blindly throwing words from his vocals. It was anything that he could do to try and stop her from crying. He couldn't deal with it, at least not right now. "Kagome, come on, get over it," he added on.

Kagome didn't look up, didn't turn when Inuyasha shouted her name and hurried up behind her. She just clenched her fists tighter and closed her eyes as the tears threatened to fall. "I am not crying!" Kagome denied angrily. She hated it the way Inuyasha could always seem to bring out the worst in her. The fact that he could bring out the best in her as well was lost to her just then, forgotten for the moment.
Kagome felt the tears leave her then, just for the moment, and felt her temper rising again when he told her to stop being stupid. "Sit, boy," She said, her voice soft, quiet, but holding no less rage or anger making her voice almost a harsh whisper. She didn't turn to see the effects of her command, didn't care to see them as she simply started to walk away from Inuyasha, hoping a small walk would cool her off before she decided to do something stupid other than telling him to sit again.

Seriously? She was just going to stand there and yell at him, telling him that she wasn't crying? His nose said otherwise and InuYasha couldn't believe a word she said. Why did she even argue with him? If she just agreed with everything then they wouldn't be fighting all of the time. A growl erupted in his throat as he looked at her. What did she think he was? Stupid or something? No, in the inu hanyou's mind he was far from that. He was the best thing in the world since his father had died.
InuYasha was about to turn around and just start yelling at her like he normally did but something stopped him before he could even open his mouth. The beads around his neck glowed with a bright purple. The hanyou was sent flying to the ground thanks to gravity and the spell cast on the beards. Of course, he went face first. CRASH. He twitched where he was, the pain pulsing through his body as his ears went back against his skull. The impact made on the ground was harder than normal thanks to Kagome's anger at that time then.
"Would you stop that already," he suddenly yelled. As he was about ready to go on and complain, he took a quick note that Kagome was now missing. He looked up, down, left, and right until he saw the girl just wandering off, leaving him and that stupid bag behind. He growled as he got up, grabbed the bag and went running after her. She was not going to get away with that! "Kagome, don't walk away from me when I'm talking to you," he suddenly yelled. "Where do you think you're going by yourself with the jewel shards anyway, stupid?!"

Kagome wandered through the forest blindly, ignoring Inuyasha's shout at her being stupid again, and letting her feet take her where they would go. She stopped and looked up when she realized where she had wondered to. The tree, where she had first met Inuyasha, where he had been pinned by Kikyo's arrow when she had believed he betrayed her. They knew now it had been a plot by Naraku. As she lifted her head to look at the spot Inuyasha had been, where the sunlight now beat down on empty bark, a tear slid from her eye and onto the ground near a root that stuck up slightly from the earth.
Kagome never understood why Inuyasha always compared her to Kikyo. Sure, Kagome and Kikyo shared the same soul, she was Kikyo's reincarnation. But still, they were so little alike, apart from that. Kagome was her own person, had her own life back in the modern era of Japan... So why was she here? Why had she come here again, if she had known what her reception would be with Inuyasha.
A thought buzzed in the back of her mind, but she refused to acknowledge it. She refused to admit she had fallen for the Inu Hanyou, it would make everything so much harder for everyone. What would it matter if Inuyasha decided he loved the dead priestess more than her? That thought hurt her down to the core, but she tried her best to ignore the pain as she sat under the tree, resting her face on her knees as she tried not to weep. She didn't care, she wouldn't care. And once she convinced herself of that, which there was no chance of doing, what would she do then? Would she give up her search to find the Jewel Shards, or would she keep helping until they found them all, then just leave? It would have been so much easier for everyone if she just hadn't been pulled into the feudal era by Mistress Centipede all that time ago.
Kagome wrapped her arms tighter around her drawn up knees and stared blindly out into the forest, not seeing anything, not hearing anything, so lost in her thoughts a demon could have attacked her and she wouldn't have noticed until it was too late. She ached, a pain no medicine would be able to cure as she wondered idly if Inuyasha would come to find her, or just leave her alone like he had before.

He'd been so shocked that she hadn't said anything to him again, that he'd stopped in his tracks, allowing Kagome to just wander away on him for a length of time. Had he really made her so mad now that she wouldn't talk to him? All he had done was compare her to Kikyou and called her stupid twice! That couldn't have made that big of a impact on the miko. These thoughts frustrated him. Why was she the one that had to be so stubborn when he wad concerned about her crying? Why did he even care?
The inu hanyou had never been able to understand Kagome's deep and twisted emotions. If she never told him anything, then he would never know anyway. That was a problem that they both had with each other though. This was a great flaw as well. They both just couldn't break down these walls that they'd built up between each other when it came to their emotions. He never said much to Kagome about how he felt. She never said much to him. It tore them apart but all at the same time, it would bring them together.
"Damn that Kagome," he muttered to himself as he shook his head, trying to get these emotions out of his mind right now. He had to go find her before she decided to do something stupid again. Kagome may have had some powers, but in his eyes, she was too weak to defend herself without his help. That was because he was always so concerned of protecting her though. He enjoyed feeding his ego, making himself believe that he was really strong. One day, he planned on becoming as strong, if not stronger than his father. Just a matter of time.
Sniffing the air gently, he picked up her scent coming in the direction from the tree? What was she doing there? This only made him want to find her even more now because that tree meant so much to him. It was where he and Kikyou were supposed to meet for him to become a human. It was also the place where she had put him to sleep for fifty years. Not a good memory. With a single push from his toes, InuYasha was following Kagome's scent again. Lucky for him, he had a nose so that he could track her.
Weaving through the trees, he eventually came to a halt, finding himself at the Tree of Ages. This was now where he saw Kagome, sitting there at the tree and just staring into space. He felt guilty at first but wouldn't allow her to see it. Jumping down from the trees, he gracefully landed not to far away and walked to Kagome, kneeling down in front of her. "Kagome...?" He didn't yell, and didn't sound angered or annoyed. His voice held a slight hint of concern for the girl. He waved a clawed hand in her face to try and get her attention.

Kagome was starting to feel a bit better as she sat under the large tree. Her anger had abated, though she was still working on getting rid of the hurt of being compared to the long dead miko woman. She liked Kikyo, at least part of her did, because she felt a kinship to the woman because they shared the same soul. But she hated being compared to her, hated anyone, especially Inuyasha, to look at her and think 'Kikyo'. She wasn't Kikyo, she would never be her. So why couldn't he just understand that? When she heard Inuyasha, she didn't look up until he was in front of her. Then she turned her dry eyes up to him and just stared blandly at him for a moment. She didn't notice the concern, at least not right away, but she did notice that the anger, the annoyance from earlier was gone now.
"What is it, Inuyasha?" She asked, her voice soft with no emotion twisting in it. She looked at him, her eyes blank, her voice blank. Inside though, she was twisting with hurt and a sort of betrayal she couldn't, or wouldn't, understand.
